Krabi Town is the provincial capital, a small river town where life still runs at a Thai pace. Most visitors sleep at the beaches, but the town makes a good base if you travel on by bus or boat, or just want a quieter, more local holiday. It is also the closest drop-off from the airport.

Krabi Town sits where the Krabi River meets the sea, about 13 km from the airport. It is the administrative centre of the province, so you find the offices, banks, hospitals and the main bus station here, next to shops that serve local people rather than tourists. A walk along the riverfront takes you past small cafés, temples and views of the limestone hills across the water.
Hotels in town cost less than at the beaches, and the food is cheaper too. Many travellers stay a night on arrival or before a flight, and then move on to Ao Nang or an island. If you like to see a place at a local pace, the town is a good base, and tours can be booked in the many shops along the main streets.
